Photofacials/IPL

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a gentle skin therapy often referred to as photorejuvenation or a photofacial/fotofacial. This laser skin rejuvenation treatment encourages skin healing and regeneration by removing damaged and aged skin while stimulating the growth of natural collagen. At Lifestyle Solutions MedSpa, we utilize the most advanced technology available – the Cynosure® Palomar Icon™ Aesthetic System – to provide superior results. This state-of-the-art device offers enhanced rejuvenation in less time than traditional IPL treatments, as well as an improved experience from start to finish.

Palomar Icon™ photofacials treat a variety of cosmetic skin conditions such as sun damage, uneven skin tone and texture, enlarged pores, freckles, spider veins, rosacea, and more. The high-energy light waves penetrate deep into the layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production, which can fill wrinkles and restore your skin to a younger, smoother, and more supple appearance. While the deep layers of the skin are treated, the surface of the skin is cooled and remains intact. *This means you should experience little to no downtime as a result of your treatments and minimal discomfort.

*Individual Results May Vary

What to Expect from a Palomar Icon™ Photofacial

The Palomar Icon™ photofacial procedure is designed to be as gentle as possible. It is non-invasive, quick (usually 20-40 minutes, depending on the size of the treated area), and typically offers excellent results. After the skin is cleansed a topical cooling gel with anesthetic is applied, and protective glasses or eye pads are placed. Then one of our skilled medical spa team members will direct an intense beam of light at the area to be treated through a handpiece that moves across the skin. The Palomar Icon™ emits a range of light waves that are tuned and targeted to affect hemoglobin (the red blood cells in the blood vessels) or melanin (the brown pigment in freckles and age spots). One pass can provide maximal treatment in just minutes due to the increased surface coverage. Cool air is blown across the surface of the skin to further enhance your comfort during the procedure. The light penetrates the skin, causing minor damage to pigmented or vascular areas. As a result, the skin’s natural repair mechanisms will be stimulated, which can ultimately minimize the visibility of these concerns and yield healthier, more vibrant skin.

After using the Palomar Icon™ the area may appear slightly flushed, but this is quite normal and will resolve quickly. Some patients show some signs of swelling, and we can provide cold compresses to reduce this effect. Although some discomfort may occur, most patients tolerate the procedure well and compare the feeling to snaps from a rubber band. The first treatment may cause the strongest sensations. As your skin tone and texture improve, the laser should feel more comfortable. Unless otherwise indicated, you should be able to apply makeup, if desired, afterwards. Results are not apparent for several hours to a few days after therapy, depending on the condition being treated and its location. As collagen forms, redness will decrease and the skin should appear smoother.

How many treatments are required?

The number of treatments our physician will recommend depends on the condition being treated and its severity; however, most individuals will need three to five sessions to achieve optimal results. These enhancements will be spaced about three to six weeks apart, for a total of about three to five months of treatment. The more sun damage or pigmentation you have the more likely a full five procedures will be necessary to attain your cosmetic goals. Although rare, some severe instances of redness or brown spots may require more than five treatments. Each session can take between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated and other factors. The results will become more pronounced with each successive round, until you see clearer, healthier, and more evenly toned skin than before.

What Are the Side Effects of IPL?

IPL can produce minor side effects that may bother some patients but will usually subside rather quickly after treatment. Initial side effects may include redness, swelling, the feeling of a sunburn, or hyperpigmentation in treated areas. Overall, most of these side effects are mild and/or temporary. Our team will discuss the safety and risks of IPL therapy with you during your pre-treatment consultation.

What Does IPL Aftercare and Recovery Look Like?

In typical cases of IPL therapy, the patient will likely heal within a week and as quickly as two to three days; however, the recovery process for each individual will be unique. How long it takes to heal will depend on the specific treatment the individual is receiving, their unique skin type, and the area that is being targeted.

Here are a few general instructions we typically tell our patients to help in the recovery process:

  • Keep skin clean by using a gentle cleanser
  • Wear sunscreen everyday
  • Use cold compresses as needed for comfort and to relieve swelling
  • Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible
  • Avoid taking hot baths or hot showers for at least 48 hours
  • Avoid exercising or other strenuous activities for at least 48 hours
  • Avoid scratching or picking at the skin

What Is the Cost of IPL?

Each patient will require a specifically tailored treatment plan to meet their individual needs and goals, so the price will vary for every person. Factors such as the number of sessions needed, location and size of the treatment area, and intensity of treatment can influence the overall expense. The best way for us to give a precise quote would be for you to schedule a personal consultation. We will be able to go over your treatment plan, including the total cost, and answer any questions you may have about pricing. We accept all major credit cards and offer patient financing options through CareCredit®.
